Bikes – More to Them Then You Think

May 31, 2010 in Hybrid Bikes Articles

Curious about the origin of that two wheeled machine we call a bicycle? Here are some bike facts that will have you laughing, scratching your head, and wondering in amazement.

Although the first bicycle ever, truly, invented can be traced back to Baron Karl de Drais of Germany during the year 1818, many people tried to invent something similar since the Baron’s reign. A man named Kirkpatrick Macmillan devised a contraption similar to a bicycle that had wheels made of iron and cranks for pedals … needless to say, this was not a huge success. Still, many believed that Macmillan had an interesting idea, which prompted others to try and invent something unique as well. From the time Macmillan created his iron clad bicycle, the bike facts just keep on getting stranger as time marches on.

“The Boneshaker” (sounds scary, doesn’t it?) was created during the late 1800s, and this invention nearly broke the scales at 160 lbs. Still, the weight of this machine did not deter people from wishing to ride it, thus the bicycle became extremely popular and there were many boneshaker bicycle events held throughout the world. Not so impressed with this rattling machine, James Starley of England developed another bicycled called the “penny-farthing” that became even more popular than the boneshaker (perhaps people were drawn to the less frightening name).

Of all the wacky and loopy bike facts out there, this one is rather tame (though interesting): the overall design of the bicycle has not really changed since the 1890s. Of course, different bikes have been created for different purposes (mountain, road, hybrid), but the concept of a frame with two wheels (that are not made of iron) has stayed the same. Why is it that we love the bicycle so much? Well, no one is really sure, though there are around 20 million bicycles owned throughout the nation today.

For most of us, the bicycle is a cherished part of our childhood, though none of this could have been possible without the Baron Karl de Drais. From the boneshaker to the penny-farthing and to the cleverly crafted mountain bicycles of today, this is one oddly shaped invention that has captivated our hearts and souls for hundreds of years.

Whether you enjoy racing them, or merely admiring their history, bicycles are the embodiment of all that is pure and good in the world. These bike facts may seem slightly peculiar, though they will give you something to think about during your next long ride.

Nirve Ultraliner Men’s 3-Speed Automatic Shifting Hybrid Cruiser Bike Review

Available at Amazon Check Price Now!

Bike build is very solid, designed to require minimal maintenance. Comfortable seat! Pictures do not do this bike justice! The aluminum ball peen’d finish is incredible. This bike has a shimano dynamo on the front wheel. It is used to power the CPU for the auto-shifter. According to Nirve customer service, you can also use the dynamo to power lighting systems. The auto-shifter works very well. To warn you of the next shift (down or up), there is an audible beep. Bike assembly was easy. I did have to adjust both brakes prior to riding. Bike arrived overall in good shape. The rear fender (both fenders are plastic) was not properly wrapped during packaging and had several scratches (minor) on it.

NOTE: I purchased the 21″ version of the Ultraliner Men’s bike. THIS BIKE IS FREAKIN’ HUGE!!! I am 6’1″ tall and my crotch barely clears the center bar (less than 1″). I have the seat adjusted to about 2″ from the lowest position. I should have probably ordered the smaller version. This bike would be perfect for guys who are 6’3″ or taller.

Amazon/FedEx shipping was prompt.

Cadillac Eldorado Lesiure Series Men’s Cruiser Bike Review

Available at Amazon Check Price Now!

I bought this bike 6 months ago and I have no complaints. I was looking for a ladies cruiser and once I discovered Cadillac cruisers, I really wanted one! Problem was, the ladies only came in PINK! and I am not a “pink” kind of girl. I didn’t want a buy a bike that says, “HEY! Look at me! Look at my bright PINK bike!” I also wanted a bike that was LIGHT so I could put it on a bike rack and take it beachside. This bike is a lot lighter than most bikes out there.

So I ordered the mens’ smaller frame (I’m only 5’3) in silver. I put it together myself (should be no problem if you have the right tools). A screw or something was missing and I called the number and received it in just a few days.

So much for not being flashy..when people see this bike up close they are impressed and I have gotten so many compliments.

I love riding my bike around. The seat is comfy as far as bike seats go. My boyfriend has a mountain bike and riding his bike is almost like torture after sitting on my Eldorado’s seat! (He prefers my bike too, as does my 54 yr old mom and my 14 year old cousin…everyone falls in love after 1 ride on this bike).

And another fun part..a cute little bell! It is removable) If you decide to get a bike rack for this bike, I would check it out before buying the rack. The frame on this bike is very wide and it does not easily fit into bike racks like, say a mountain bike would.

With this bike you’ll get a ride that’s comfortable, smooth and you won’t sacrifice good looks. For this price you will not find a lot of bicycles as nice! It was definitely worth the price and more.

Amazon.com Bicycle Buying Guide
Finding the Right Bike
To really enjoy cycling, it’s important to find a bicycle that works for you. Here are some things to keep in mind when you’re in the market for a new bike:

The Right Ride
In general, bikes are broken down into three major categories:

  • Road and Racing Bikes–As a general rule, road and racing are built for speed and longer distances on paved surfaces. Thinner tires, lightweight 29-inch (700c) wheels and drop bars that allow for a more aerodynamic position are the norm. Most road bikes, regardless of price, offer many gears for tackling both hilly and flat terrain.
  • Mountain Bikes–With their larger tires, hill-friendly gearing and upright position, mountain bikes are very popular for all types of riding, both on pavement and off. Mountain bikes that are designed specifically for rugged trail use typically feature a suspension fork. Some may have rear suspension, as well. A quick change of the tires on any mountain bike–even one that you use regularly on trails–adds to its versatility and makes it a worthy street machine.
  • Comfort/Cruiser Bikes–For tooling around on bike paths, light trails, or for cruising a quiet beach-side lane, comfort/cruiser bikes are the ticket. With a super-relaxed riding position, padded seats, and limited or no gearing, these bikes are made for enjoying the scenery and having fun with the family.

The Right Price
A bike’s price boils down to three essentials: frame materials, bike weight, and component quality and durability.

  • Entry-level–You’ll find a wide range of comfort and cruiser bikes in this category, as well as some lower-end mountain bikes and road bikes. Most will have steel frames and components that are designed to last for several years with frequent use.
  • Mid-range–Bikes in this range may feature a lighter aluminum frame with mid-range components that keep performing after miles of use. If you’re looking for a quality bike that is relatively lightweight and will stand up to abuse, this is the “sweet spot.” Most serious commuter and touring bikes fall into this category, as do mid-range mountain bikes with a decent front suspension.
  • High-end–Racers and serious enthusiasts who expect lightweight, high-performance components will want to stick to this category. For road bikes, exotic frame materials (carbon fiber, titanium) and ultra-lightweight components can add thousands to the price tag. Mountain bikes in this class often feature advanced front and rear suspension technology, as well as components designed to handle lots of rugged trail action.

The Right Size
Fit is crucial for comfort, control, and proper power and endurance on a bike. Here are some basic bike fit tips:

  • Stand-over Height–To find out if a bike’s overall height fits your body, measure your inseam. Next, determine how much clearance you’ll need between your crotch and the top tube of the bike. For a mountain bike, you’ll want three to five inches of clearance. A road bike should offer between one and two inches of clearance, while a commuter bike should have two to four inches. Compare the stand-over height for a given bike to your measurements (inseam + clearance) to determine the right bike height.
  • Top Tube Length–You can measure your torso to get a good estimate of proper top tube length. First, make a fist and extend your arm. Measure from the center of your fist to the end of your collarbone (the part that intersects your shoulder). Next, measure your torso by placing a book against your crotch with the spine facing up. Measure from the spine to the bottom of your throat (the spot between your collarbones). Finally, add the two measurements (arm length + torso length), divide the number in half and subtract six inches. This is your approximate top tube length. Compare this number to a bike’s posted top tube length. You can allow for about two inches longer or shorter, as most bikes can be adjusted via stem length/height and saddle fore/aft position to make fine adjustments to the fit.
  • Bikes for Women–Proportionally, women tend to have a shorter torso and longer legs than men. Bike makers design women’s bikes that offer a shorter top tube and many comfort/cruiser bikes built for women may also provide more stand-over clearance.

The Right Accessories
When you make a bike purchase, don’t forget these crucial add-ons:

  • Helmet (this is a must!)
  • Seat pack
  • Lock
  • Hydration pack, or water bottles and bottle cages
  • Spare tubes
  • Portable bike pump
  • Gloves

Hybrid Bikes – Jack of All Trades

May 25, 2010 in Hybrid Bikes Articles

0

Bicycle riding can add a sense of adventure and pleasure to your life. If you enjoy riding, choosing the right bike is of paramount importance. Earlier, you had two choices: a road bike or a mountain bike. However, technology and innovation has conceived and brought into existence several types of bikes like hybrid bikes, comfort bikes and recumbent bikes.

Selecting the right bike depends on where you intend to ride. Do you want to ride on the roads or back-routes? Do you want to race at breakneck speed or do you want to move at a leisurely pace? Though most bikes will let you do all these things, some bikes are made to suit certain pursuits more than others. The hybrid bike is one such bike that allows you to enjoy the best of both the worlds.

A hybrid bike is a kind of multi-purpose bike that has the features of mountain bikes as well as road bikes. The mountain bike was perceived as too slow, unwieldy and heavy for the average rider. So designers created the Hybrid Bike by taking the best elements from mountain bikes and road bikes. The hybrid is fitted with wider tyres than your average road bike but has similar gear systems as the mountain bike. Some models also come fitted with mudguards and rise stems which can be adjusted easily.

Hybrid bikes are light in weight. They can be used to ride on roads, tracks, footpaths and rough terrain. They can withstand longer journeys as well.

These bikes generally use the road bikes 700cc standard. This enables it to go comfortably over pavements and also facilitates easy climbing. You can choose between an upright position and a speed-oriented position. The upright position is preferred by casual riders since it doesn’t strain the back and neck. There is always high air pressure in the tyres which allows you to go at faster speeds and travel longer distances.

However, it is best not to use hybrid bikes to ride over mountain tracks and severe off-road paths. They are better suited to gravel and dirt roads and for commuting to and fro.

Get More Use From Your Retractable Tonneau Cover by Adding a Bed Rail System

May 24, 2010 in Hybrid Bikes Articles

0

If you’ve recently purchased a retractable tonneau cover or are at least thinking about it, consider adding a bed rail system to create even more versatility for your pickup truck. Bed rail systems are truck accessories that can be custom-fitted to work with certain types of retractable tonneaus. With these you’ll be able to get more use out of your tonneau cover because they enable the installation of sport/utility rig mounts.

How Do Rails and Rig Mounts Work?

The bed rails fit snugly along with your tonneau cover as long as you order compatible rails. They support a utility rig mount firmly, which is usually suspended in the air upwards, enabling your retractable tonneau cover to open and close with ease underneath. Once in place, the rig mount can be used to haul sports or utility equipment that is weather resistant while keeping valuables or items subject to weather damage safely under the retractable tonneau cover. It’s similar to using a luggage rack to give more room inside a car or van.

Not only can you haul more items at once using a rail system and rig mount, but you can pick and choose which equipment or items you’d rather leave exposed to the elements or thieves. Modern retractable tonneaus often have a secure lock system in place so you can lock away items you don’t want seen by the public. This works great when you’re out and about, parking for periods of time during work or play.

When you take your next hiking or fishing trip, or a family excursion, place luggage, coolers, picnic items, valuables, etc. in the bed of the truck under your tonneau cover. Then, secure bikes or other heavier recreational gear to your rig mount. This gives you more room in your truck bed without having all of your items exposed.

Choosing a Rail System

Be sure to choose a bed rail system that is designed to be installed with your type of tonneau cover. For example, the Explorer Series bed rails by Pace Edwards can be installed with JackRabbit (Full Metal or Original) and Bedlocker retractable tonneau covers. These are black-powder coated extruded aluminum rails featuring keyhole-style channels, which enable you to instantly secure exchangeable rig mounts. No-drill clamps are used to install the rails. Explorer Series rails can accommodate Utility Rig Racks(R), Contractor Rig Racks(R) and MultiSport(TM) Racks. The main thing you’ll want to make sure of is that the bed rails are compatible with your tonneau and truck size and shape. Also, be sure a warranty is available in case something goes wrong during or after installation.

Bed rails can easily be ordered online along with retractable tonneau covers and rig mounts to fit your needs. Be sure to stick with quality brands such as Pace Edwards to ensure security and easy installation of your items. Most items can be installed from your home with no drilling. Instructions are provided, so this saves time and gives you peace of mind that your bed rails and tonneau cover are installed properly. Some online stores have special offers if you order your bed rails along with a cover. So if you’re contemplating either of these items, look for a combination that works for you!
